Pharmacology/Description

Psyllium Husk is a mild laxative & it contains 80% soluble fibre. It also soothing the gastric and intestinal mucosa and hence effective in gastric irritation and ulceration. Psyllium also lowers serum cholesterol levels (LDL), reduces blood glucose that are suitable for diabetic & obese patients. The main chemical ingredient of Psyllium Husk is mucilage; very useful in chronic dysentery, constipation and piles.

Indication

Relieves Constipation, Relieves Piles & Hemorrhoids, Helps to lower cholesterol level, Improves Cardiac health, Helps to control blood glucose level, Diminishes Obesity, Relieves Irritable bowel syndrome. Psyllium Husk is used in patients requiring a high fiber regimen such as for the relief of constipation, However Psyllium Husk also provides easy bowel movement with smooth stool. For the management of bowel function in patients with anal fissures, colon cancer, post anal & rectal surgery, chronic diarrhoea associated with diverticular disease, ulcerative colitis also relieves constipation during pregnancy & lactating mother.

Dosage And Administration

Usual dose-1 Spoonful (5.38 g) 1-3 times daily or as per doctor's advice. Adult and child over 12 years-1 Spoonful (5.38 g) with water 2 times daily or as per doctor's advice. Children 6 to 12 years- ½ to 1 spoonful with water 2 times daily or as per doctor's advice. Children below 6 years- Not recommended except as directed by physician. Use in Pregnancy & Lactation- Psyllium Husk Powder is not absorbed into the bloodstream and does not pass into breast milk. Therefore, It can be used safely during pregnancy & lactation. Laxgel should be taken after meal. An additional glass of water is helpful after taking Laxgel.

Side Effects

Flatulence or no significant side effect has been observed. Contraindications Contraindicated in patients with gastrointestinal tract obstruction or threatening obstruction of the bowel.

Drug Interactions

No significant interaction has been observed with other medicine. However Psyllium Husk Powder may delay gastric empting time and reduce the absorption of calcium, iron and zinc. Therefore, other agent should be taken one hour before or few hours after taking Psyllium Husk powder.

Pharmaceutical Precautions

Store in cool and dry place. Close the cap of container after use. Keep out of reach of children.
